If your dog is itchy, see your vet before you buy a new shampoo. A Virginia Tech veterinary dermatologist says "sensitive skin" in dogs usually points to an underlying problem, most often allergies. For routine baths, pick a gentle, soap-free dog shampoo without added fragrance or dyes, like earthbath's Oatmeal & Aloe Fragrance Free.

We didn't test these shampoos. The picks are based on what's on the label, plus guidance from the AKC and Virginia Tech's Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Why is my dog itchy, and will shampoo help?

Shampoo cleans. It doesn't fix the reason a dog is itchy. VCA Animal Hospitals sorts the common causes of itching into three main groups: allergies, parasites such as fleas, and infections, and says you and your vet need to find the cause.

Ivan Ravera, who specializes in dermatology at Virginia Tech's Veterinary Teaching Hospital, puts it more bluntly: "There's no such thing as 'sensitive skin' in pets. In my experience, these pets often have an underlying condition." He adds that most of those cases are allergies.

So here's the order I'd go in:

  1. See your vet if your dog is scratching, licking or chewing a lot, or has red skin, bumps, sores or a smell.
  2. Use what your vet prescribes. If it's a medicated shampoo, follow the directions exactly. Virginia Tech says most need to stay on the skin for 10 to 15 minutes to work.
  3. For everyday baths, use a gentle shampoo made for dogs. That's what the picks below are for.

What should you look for in a dog shampoo for sensitive skin?

  • Made for dogs. The AKC says dog skin has a pH of 6.2 to 7.4, more neutral than human skin at 5.5 to 5.6, so human shampoo throws off the balance and can leave skin dry and flaky.
  • Soap-free and gentle. The AKC suggests soap-free options that hydrate rather than dry out the skin and coat.
  • No added fragrance. The AKC says to try to avoid artificial fragrances, which can cause allergic reactions.
  • No parabens or dyes, which the AKC also says to stay away from.
  • Easy to rinse out. Virginia Tech says shampoo left on the skin causes irritation.

How often should you bathe a dog with sensitive skin?

Many healthy dogs do well with a bath every 4 to 12 weeks, according to Virginia Tech, depending on coat and lifestyle. More often isn't better if it dries the skin out. If your vet has your dog on a medicated shampoo, follow the vet's schedule instead.

How do you bathe a dog with sensitive skin?

Virginia Tech's tips, in order:

  1. Brush first. Do any big detangling a day or two before, because rough brushing makes tiny scrapes that sting under shampoo.
  2. Use lukewarm water.
  3. Apply shampoo gently with your fingertips, neck to tail, and keep it away from the eyes, ears and nose.
  4. Rinse thoroughly. Then rinse again. Leftover shampoo irritates skin.
  5. Dry well. A super-absorbent towel like the Soggy Doggy Super Shammy helps.
  6. Call your vet if you see redness, bumps, a lot of scratching or an odd smell after the bath.

Ravera says a healthy dog's skin barrier usually recovers more than 50% within 24 hours of minor damage and fully within about 72 hours, but more serious damage can take weeks.

What shampoo do groomers use?

It varies by groomer and by dog. If your dog has sensitive skin, tell your groomer before the appointment and ask what they plan to use, or bring the shampoo your vet recommended. You can find dog groomers near you on iPetzo.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best dog shampoo for itchy skin? Start with your vet, because shampoo doesn't fix the cause of itching. For routine baths, a gentle, soap-free, fragrance-free dog shampoo like earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe Fragrance Free is a good fit.

What dog shampoos should you stay away from? Human shampoo, and dog shampoos with artificial fragrance, parabens or dyes, according to the AKC. Virginia Tech also says to toss shampoo that's more than a year old.
