How much does a dog walker cost per walk?

Most 30-minute walks cost $16 to $29, depending on the platform and the walker. Here's what the big sources report, by walk length:

Walk length Rover (average range) Wag (median, typical range)
15 to 20 minutes $16 – $25 (15 min) $18, $15 – $22 (20 min)
30 minutes $16 – $25 $24, $20 – $29
60 minutes $29 – $38 $36, $30 – $45

Sources: Rover (article updated September 21, 2026; prices from Rover's data as of September 2025) and Wag (median base prices from completed walks, July 2026, before the $2.99 booking fee).

Why does a 15-minute walk cost the same as a 30-minute one on Rover? Rover says most walkers build travel time or gas into the fee, so the shorter walk doesn't save much.

Independent walking businesses often charge more than the apps. Time To Pet, which makes scheduling software for pet care companies, says walkers typically charge $24 to $34 for 30 minutes, with a 2024 U.S. average of $29.50. Bark (updated January 2025) puts the average walk at $20, with a range of $10 to $35.

How much do dog walkers charge per hour?

Expect about $30 to $60 for a full hour. Bark gives that hourly range, Wag's median 60-minute walk is $36, and Rover's average 60-minute walk is $29 to $38. Thumbtack (updated October 2025) says the average dog walker charges $20 to $40 an hour, depending on walk length, number of dogs and location.

What does dog walking cost per week or month?

Five 30-minute walks a week cost about $80 to $125 at Rover's rates, per Rover. Five hour-long walks cost $145 to $190.

Here's the math for a typical weekday schedule, using each source's own number:

Price per 30-min walk 5 walks a week
$21.45 (Rover average) $107.25 a week, about $465 a month
$26.99 (Wag median plus fee) $134.95 a week, about $585 a month
$29.50 (Time To Pet 2024 average) $147.50 a week, about $640 a month

Weekly and monthly figures are our own math (per-walk price × 5, then × 4.33 weeks), with months rounded to the nearest $5. Wag's figure is its $24 median plus the $2.99 booking fee. None of them include tips, holiday fees or extra dogs.

Booking a regular schedule usually costs less per walk. Rover says one-off and last-minute walks may cost more than recurring ones, and Thumbtack gives the example of a North Carolina company that takes 10% off prepaid packages.

What do dog walkers charge in different cities?

Big, expensive cities cost more, but less than you might think. Wag's July 2026 data shows the median 30-minute walk in most large metros sits within a few dollars of the $24 national figure. San Francisco is the clear outlier.

City Wag median, 30 min
San Francisco, CA $32
Los Angeles, CA $25
Seattle, WA $25
Denver, CO $23
Atlanta, GA $23
Miami, FL $23
Dallas–Fort Worth, TX $23
Houston, TX $22
Phoenix, AZ $22

Rover says rural walkers often charge less, because of lower demand and a lower cost of living.

What raises the price of a dog walk?

The base rate is only part of the bill. These are the things that most often add to it:

  • A second dog. Most walkers charge more per extra dog, but not double. Thumbtack's examples include a Seattle walker who charges $28 for two dogs versus $23 for one, and a Florida walker who adds $5 per extra dog.
  • Holidays. Rover says most walkers add a holiday surcharge. In Thumbtack's examples, that's $5 to $10 extra per walk.
  • Same-day or one-off requests. Wag lists extra dogs, holidays and same-day requests as things that can add to the base price.
  • Solo walks. Group walks cost less. Bark says you could save $5 to $10 by choosing a group walk if your dog gets along with other dogs.
  • Puppies and reactive dogs. Rover says puppies need more frequent attention, and dogs that react to other dogs or people need a more experienced walker, so both can cost more.
  • Platform fees. Wag adds a $2.99 booking fee per walk unless you pay for Wag Premium. Compare the all-in total, not just the base rate.

Is $20 for a 30-minute dog walk a good price?

Yes, $20 is a fair-to-low price for a 30-minute walk by 2026 national numbers. It's inside Rover's $16 to $25 range and just under Rover's $21.45 average and Wag's $24 median.

If someone quotes well under that, ask what's included and whether they're insured. If a quote is well over, it may cover a solo walk, a long drive to your home or extras like feeding and medication. Thumbtack lists one example of $20 for giving medication as an add-on.

How much should you tip a dog walker?

Tipping is optional, but 10% to 15% is typical for regular walks, according to Care.com (updated February 24, 2026). Care.com suggests 20% or more for holidays, bad weather, last-minute requests or a difficult dog.

On a $24 walk, 10% to 15% is $2.40 to $3.60. On Wag, the company says 100% of tips go to the walker.

What should you ask before you book a walker?

Price matters, but so does who's holding your house key. Before you book:

  1. Ask if they're licensed, bonded and insured. Thumbtack recommends checking this, especially if the walker will have a key to your home.
  2. Ask about experience with dogs like yours. Rover suggests looking for a walker who has handled dogs with a similar energy level, temperament and needs, such as reactivity or medication.
  3. Read reviews and call a reference. Thumbtack suggests both.
  4. Ask what happens in an emergency. Thumbtack suggests asking whether the walker has a relationship with a local vet.
  5. Get every fee in writing. That means extra dogs, holidays, weekends and cancellations.
  6. Sort out access. A walker needs a reliable way in. If you'd rather not hand out a spare key, a combination key box like the Master Lock 5400D portable key box hangs on a doorknob and holds up to five keys behind a code you set.

If your dog would rather play than walk, Rover says daycare can be a better fit for dogs with very high play needs. You can compare dog daycare centers on iPetzo too. If your dog also needs a bath or a trim, see our dog grooming cost guide.
